Addressing Trauma in Conquered People

In this video, Dr. Sandra Lopez-Baez (PhD, LPCC-SUP, NCC, CCMHC, ACS) explores the reciprocal relationship between the brain and culture. Colonization has inflicted historical trauma on “conquered” peoples, which continues to manifest as collective and individual trauma in the current generation, and has recently been shown by fMRI and ERP to re-wire the brain through causing changes in structural and functional neuroanatomy. These effects of trauma are seen in all domains of being. Trauma-informed care (TIC) has guiding values to help heal the wounds of such trauma, with nine domains of integration. Dr. Lopez-Baez discusses the core principles of TIC and goes over neuroscience-supported counseling interventions that are compatible with it.
