Culturally Competent Care for Immigrants and Refugees

In this video, Dr. Lotes Nelson (Southern New Hampshire University) discusses how mental health practitioners can provide culturally competent care for immigrants and refugees. She examines the migration process and the toll it takes on refugees' health, deconstructs numerous myths surrounding immigration, provides sample stories of immigrants to the U.S., and examines which interventions are likely to be effective in building immigrant resilience and healing the trauma. Dr. Nelson also notes why self-care is important for therapists working with this population, and which practices can help achieve that.
