Neuroscience and Neurobiology Basics for Therapists

In this video, Drs Allen Ivey and Mary Bradford Ivey discuss why the best evidence base for thinking about multiculturalism and social justice is to be found in neuroscience. Citing numerous advances in brain science which challenge established understandings, Ivey and Ivey note how mental illness is generated from environmentally-induced dysregulation of homeostasis. Thus, stressful experiences (such as from poverty, overcrowding, and poor diet as well as lack of exercise) are shown to cause chemical/hormonal changes in the brain which undermine healthy thinking, feeling, and living. The Iveys recommend integrating drug treatment with psychotherapy and also paying attention to the gut-brain axis.
